How US Sales Tax Rates Work
The US has no federal sales tax. Each state sets its own rate, and local jurisdictions—cities, counties, and special districts—can layer additional taxes on top. The "combined rate" is what you actually pay.
When calculating the original price before sales tax, always use the combined rate for your specific city, not just the state rate. Using only the state rate will give you an incorrect pre-tax amount.
Use the reverse sales tax calculator on our home page if you already know your combined rate, or select your state above to get pre-loaded rates.
